AWS Orchestras and 17 Soloists Perform at Local Festival
Lisa Isenman
The Upper and Middle School Orchestras both gave excellent performances at the Solo and Ensemble Festival at First Creek Middle School on March 9. The Adjudicator was clearly impressed with the levels of quality displayed by each group. She gave accurate and helpful feedback while celebrating the good work of the ensembles. Kudos to the Upper School orchestra on perfect attendance participation.
In addition to the orchestra performances, 17 AWS students also performed solo pieces. A great deal of preparation went into every solo, and the judges all had positive and helpful feedback. It was an especially good experience for the 6th graders who all showed themselves to be confident, prepared and excited to show what they could do. An extra shout-out to Amber Moody, Josie Trueblood and Aurora Hake, who had to stay to the very end of the day past 4:00 pm when pizza slices were down from $2 each to 50 cents and judges were getting a little loopy.
The results were impressive: out of 21 entries from our school, 16 received Superior Ratings, the highest possible. Hyunyoung Kim was named the winner of the cello category and will perform in April at the State Competition at CWU! Savannah Langworthy and Emma Salam performed an impressive cello duo that received a second alternate to state ranking.
Special thanks to Jeff Orr for playing the advance accompaniments. He played with more than 20 students throughout the day as one of the most sought after accompanists in the area.
The next big event for Middle School will be a March 29 trip to the Evergreen State College for the Middle School String festival. Both Middle and Upper School orchestras will perform in a festival at Stadium High School on April 23.
