Middle and Upper School Musicians Get Top Marks in Music Festival

The Middle School and Upper School orchestras participated in the Solo and Ensemble Music Festival at Giaudrone Middle School in Tacoma on February 28.

The students performed both in groups and as soloists in ten minutes audition times and were heard by music educator judges who graded them and then gave useful feedback on their efforts. In the grading system, I equals an "A" grade, II is a "B" and so on. In the high school category, there is also a top player winner chosen with two alternates who advance to a state level of the event held at Central Washington University in April.

This year both the US Orchestra and the MS Orchestra received I ratings on their performances as did the MS strings trio (Julia Hanly, Ela Escobar, Eleanor Tanbar), MS Cello Duo (James Parrot and Julia Hanly) and the US Clarinet Duo (Crystal Zheng and Esmee Lai).

Several soloists also received a I rating:
  • Maya Robinson, violin
  • Ela Escobar, violin
  • Emma Salam, cello, who was also named 2nd alternate to state
  • Crystal Zheng, clarinet, who was also named 2nd alternate to state
  • Aurora Hake, violin, who was named 1st alternate to state
