Grade 3 Learns about Global Climates through Growing Tulips

Lisa Isenman
Grade 3 students in Annie Wright Day School have tracked the greening of spring in the Northern Hemisphere by planting a tulip test garden as part of an international program called Journey North. Following the protocol of planting "Red Emperor" tulip bulbs last fall, our young scientists watched them emerge and bloom, then reported on their growth to Journey North to track seasonal trends on their real-time maps. Through their observations and analysis they learned first hand how season-driven weather influences plant growth, revealing the relationship between geography and climate. In addition, they were thrilled and proud to observe their gorgeous tulips, measured at well over a foot tall.

Find Annie Wright on this interactive map and read some of our students' observations.
