Winter I Sports Roundup - Go Gators!

Upper School Varsity Basketball
The girls of the Annie Wright Varsity basketball team have shown great heart and ability so far this year. With the assistance of head coach Justin Tate and assistant coach Isaac Tate, the girls’ skills have blossomed. New this year, the girls have been challenged with playing a Varsity schedule. They rose to meet that challenge when they played the number two seed in the league, Forest Ridge, and lost by a mere two points with a final score of 34-36. Their hard work and dedication on this higher level has only made them stronger. The team has had its ups and downs but they know that with their continued drive they can end the season on a high. This year's roster includes three seniors, Haley Parks, Manmit Dhami, and Chelci Houston-Burroughs, who will be honored in their last home game on Tuesday, February 5th against Overlake. Paris Cal, Kaley Turner, Sammy Morris, Min Kim, Nora Wheelehan, Janice Fang, Maggie Wang, Alexis Joshua, Esmee Lai, Sydney Juranich, and Anne Yuan, complete the the 2012-2013 team.

Middle School Boys’ Varsity Basketball
The Varsity boys worked hard this season and improved tremendously. Their transition game gained significant strength from the first to the last game, with fast breaks and great drives to the basket by the players. Defensively they attacked opponents and gave one-hundred percent, diving on the floor and boxing out tough opponents. The Varsity team consisted mostly of 8th graders, the most we have ever had on one team. The Varsity team players are: Connor Currier, Henri Desimone, Jonathan Dudley, Ian Hahm, Thomas Parrott, Cruz Stidham, Ben Thompson, and Nick Vipond. Players who participated on both Varsity and Junior Varsity are Blake Nygren, Jonathan Chen, and Josh Oie.

Middle School Boys’ Junior Varsity Basketball
The Junior Varsity boys’ team improved a lot over the course of the season. Each player contributed to the team and found success in building fundamentals of the game seen out on the court. The team worked hard every day at practice and worked well together. Their season ended with a nail-biting win over Heritage Christian in the final quarter of the game. The JV team players are: Troy Bailey, Blake Nygren, Josh Oie, James Parrott, Alex Peterson, William Poulsen, Micah Thompson, Ryder Black, and Jonathan Chen.

Grades 4 & 5 Boys’ Basketball
This year, the 4th and 5th grade boys played within the St. Patrick’s league. With one practice and one game per week, the boys made amazing improvements in their skills and abilities over the course of the season. The focus was learning how to play man-to-man defense and how to play certain positions on offense. Since we only had 7 players, the team really had to learn to keep their stamina up with minimal rest time during games. Toward the end of the season, the team really proved that they could defend, run plays and work together in a cooperative manner in order to gain points on the board. I was very proud of the team for representing Annie Wright with great sportsmanship and positive attitudes. Thank you Carter Nelson, Eric Holland, Ranbir Pental, Ian Ball, Sterling Saunders, Robbie Kendig, and Chai Kwa for an exciting and rewarding season!

Middle School Girls’ Varsity Soccer
This year’s Middle School varsity soccer team comprised mainly 8th graders along with well-rounded 7th and 6th grade players. Annika Cederstrand  and Hannah Pukis were the main goal-keepers for the team. They were protected by a solid wall of defenders that included Lexy Sullivan, Maria Peterson, Elle Hansen, Maddie Phillips, Anna Haddad, and Alison Fitz. Rachel Wasyluka played the center-midfield position along with Carsyn Kniss, Emma Verbovski, Meghan Hansen, Libby Kendig, and Elisabeth Connett. Attacking up front were forwards Ella Robinson and Grace Hanly, who were the main scorers with their speed and aggressiveness. The girls’ Varsity team finished in third place and tied their last match (1-1) against Hawkins Middle School, with Wasyluka connecting on a penalty kick with only a few minutes left of the match. The Gators also defeated Hawkins earlier in the season in their last home match. They should be proud of all their hard work this winter.

Middle School Girls' JV Soccer
The JV soccer team kicked off the season as two separate teams - one group under coach Jake Taylor and the other under coach Madeline Scott. The start was a bit rough for both of the groups, but the girls remained in high spirits at every game. The two teams were consolidated into one after winter break, and that is when the magic started. The girls worked well together as a single group and showed improvement at every game. The team ended up winning an exciting playoff game 2-1 against Hawkins Middle School. The team: Amber Moody, Holly Shadko, Carissa Armijo, Anna Salam, Anjali Roland, Rachel Piatok, Hannah Mills, Eleanor Tanbara, Molly Bryant, Ashley Nelson, Sophie Rockney, Caitlin Farrell, Alana Ponce, Amber Kersey, Aurora Hake, Lauren Thomas, Isabelle Weeks and Audrey Linnehan
