2021-2025 Strategic Plan Update: Academics

The first strand of our 2021-2025 Strategic Plan focuses on "Making our Strong Academic Program Stronger," and we are delighted to share with you the many ways AWS has already begun to make this strand come to life.

  • Grade 5 parents were treated to a pilot of our math student profiles last June. Based on feedback, and with some further refinement, we expect to deliver math student profiles to all students in Grades 2-8 with first semester reports. These profiles allow families to see student results in Math Inventory tests throughout the student's AWS career and provide narrative context and student-specific school-based action plans and ideas for further support at home. Our goal is to build similar tools for reading and other disciplines and to expand these across all grades in order "to more effectively and transparently demonstrate academic growth and achievement of all students."
  • A small cohort of faculty and staff have joined Head of Schools Jake Guadnola, Assistant Head of Schools Sandra Forero Bush and US Assistant Director of Student Experience Dubois Hines in envisioning what a "Global Alliance" of IB Schools might look like. Together with a partner team of faculty, staff and administrators at an IB school in Windhoek, Namibia, the team has begun to draft a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to identify the main goals, expectations, deliverables and opportunities such a partnership would provide. The teams hope to have a draft MOU in place by the end of this school year.
  • The Upper Schools continue to work toward maturing 'coordinate' programming, the three IB coordinators (PYP, MYP, DP) are working together and with Divisional leaders to better articulate the IB pathways across the continuum, and faculty across departments are using the math pathways visual developed by All School Math Coordinator Emily Weston to more clearly articulate the scope and sequence across departments as well as the ways students and families can define and successfully achieve their personal AWS journeys.
