Grade 7 Student Sofia Guerra Wins Kids Design Glass Competition

Grade 7 student Sofia Guerra designed a glass creature that was chosen for the Museum of Glass Kids Design Glass Collection this month. Professional glassblowers will create two versions of "Spikefish" this Saturday, November 25, one for the original artist (Sofia), and one for the museum’s collection. They will work on her design on and off 10:00 am-2:00 pm and 2:00-5:00 pm. Visit the museum's hotshop during these hours to watch the piece come to life!

Contestants are required to provide a drawing and description of their creature. According to Sofia, "Spikefish is a performing fish. He goes to many talent shows across the ocean to sing and dance for lots of judges. Spikefish is very competitive, though. He has long, pointy fins that he sometimes steps on his opponents with, and so he had to get little blockers put on the ends of his fins so he wouldn’t do this anymore."

The project was part of Annie Wright's Grade 7 Design program in which students looked at the Design Cycle and researched glass blowers' preferences and biographical information about past winners. Annie Wright currently has an exhibit of a selection of Kids Design Glass pieces in the front hall and library.
