Sedia Bayard Receives University of Chicago's Outstanding Educator Award

Annie Wright Middle and Upper School teacher Sedia Bayard received the University of Chicago's Outstanding Educator Award last month. Each year, the University of Chicago invites first year students to nominate an educator who has influenced, challenged or helped them grow intellectually. Hundreds of students respond with letters nominating teachers who have inspired them through excellent teaching and mentorship. Mrs. Bayard was nominated by a former student from The Northwest School in Seattle who is currently a freshman at the University of Chicago.

Mrs. Bayard, who joined the Annie Wright faculty in 2017, has taught English, ESL and humanities for more than 16 years. After earning her BA in Multicultural Literature and Ethnic Studies from the Evergreen State College, she earned an MEd from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and an MA in TESOL from the School for International Training (SIT) Graduate Institute. Sedia has extensive international experience living and working in intercultural contexts and is passionate about using progressive pedagogical practices that are inclusive, joyful, intentionally designed, and relevant to students’ lives and realities. She currently teachers Humanties and ESL in Middle School, and Service Leadership and IB Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) in Upper School. Her son Ukweli is a graduate of Annie Wright Middle School.
