AWS Musicians Shine at Regional Competition

The Annie Wright advanced Upper and Middle School orchestras performed at the Washington Music Educators Association Regional Solo and Ensemble Instrumental Competition on February 10 at Giaudrone Middle School in Tacoma.

UPPER SCHOOL
The Annie Wright Upper School orchestra was named first alternate to state - second place - which has only happened one other time in 15 years of participation in the event, with a lovely performance of Fiddle Dance by Percy E. Fletcher, a piece they only reheared for a month.

Amber Moody, Audrey Leonard and Nerissa Lien also performed solos. Aurora Hake, accopanied by music teacher Jeff Orr, played a beautiful rendition of the last movement of the Mendelssohn violin concerto, and was named as the Regional Winner on violin (for the second straight year) and will perform at the State Competition in April.

Members of the orchestra include seniors Maria Peterson, Hannah Gaven, Sally Zhang and Aurora Hake; juniors Nerissa Lien, Mai Kondo and Amber Moody; sophomores Jasmine Pan, Ayianna Honeysuckle and Em Shi; and freshmen Xiomara Choto-Mueller, Sarah Chon, Tiffany Wang and Audrey Johnson.

MIDDLE SCHOOL
The Annie Wright Middle School advanced orchestra received a "Superior" (I) rating, the top mark available, at the competition

The students performed a tricky and bluesy piece called "Strings Cut Loose" by Brian Balmages which they had put together in just five rehearsals.

Ela Escobar shined as the solo 1st violinist, the cello section of four players rocked the bottom end, Rae Wartelle kept the bass groove and Julia Henning and Ella Salam had a shining moment with an extended blues viola section solo. The judge was very impressed with the group and shared some fun insights into playing the piece with them.

Also performing solos for adjudication were:

Vivienne Carr-Excellent rating (II)
Mia Escobar-Superior rating (I)
Sasha Zhang-Superior rating (I)
Anna Parrott-Excellent rating (II)
Ela Escobar-Excellent rating (II)
Sophia La Rosa-Excellent rating (II)
Maya Robinson-Superior rating (I)

Also in the orchestra were Chai Kwa, Paisley Cristobal, Rae Wartelle and Julia Henning.

Congratulations to orchestra teacher Stuart Hake and all of his students.
