Middle Schoolers Learn about Community through Service Learning Days

Last week all Middle School students participated in Service Learning Days, giving them a chance to apply the skills they have developed to a deeper understanding of issues that adversely impact individuals, communities, and our world. Students in Grade 6 experienced a two-day orientation to Service Learning and explored what it means to serve one’s community, while students in Grades 7 and 8 chose from a variety of direct-service opportunities with our service program partners in Tacoma and beyond.

This year, students in Grade 6 reflected on what it means to serve one’s community, learned about exemplars of service and social justice, were dispatched throughout the school to help out wherever they could, and created a Cardboard Arcade for younger students to play. Students in Grades 7 and 8 volunteered at a variety of organizations – Mary’s Place, the Puget Sound Pet Food Bank, The REACH Center, St. Leo’s Food Connection, Tacoma Children’s Museum, and Westside Stables – and explored the topics of poverty, homelessness, care for the environment and animals, and early childhood development.
