AWS Achieves Historic Powderpuff Victory on New James Field

On May 31  at 5:30 pm, the final whistle signaled a historic moment in AWS Athletics: A 5-4 Powderpuff flag football victory over Charles Wright Academy. This event was the first interscholastic competition on Annie Wright's new James Memorial Field.

The Gators started the game on defense and quickly gained possession of the ball after Molly Bryant tackled several Tarrier ball carriers short of the first down mark. In the first possession of offense, Virginia Miller received the handoff from quarterback Agye Mintah and split the defense on her way to a 65 yard touchdown. After another great defensive series that gave the ball back to the Gator offense, Tana-Isabela Anulacion sprinted back into the end zone for the second Gators touchdown.

Despite a quick lead and a loud home crowd though, the Tarriers found a way to get back into the game. Late in the second half with 3:30 remaining on the scoreboard and with the score tied at 4, quarterback Agye Mintah rolled out to her right on a playaction bootleg pass and connected with center Courtney Cureton for her second score of the day.

The Tarriers had a chance to score and take the game into overtime, but on a 4th down pass play Jasmine Pan deflected the pass and the Gators regained possession to run out the last few seconds to preserve the victory.

In a postgame interview, team captain Virginia Miller gave a big shoutout and thanks to Jack Fallat for his years of service to the school and to the Powderpuff teams over the decades.

Go Gators!
