2021-2024 Strategic Plan Update: Ensuring the Thrivability of Annie Wright Schools

One of the Strategic Plan’s five strands is “Ensure the Thrivability of Annie Wright Schools.” For this to happen, it is critical that the School’s physical plant meets the needs of its students. We are excited to share that this summer we will begin work on an important project, one that will allow us to accomplish two critical goals: fully unify the Middle School and create arts spaces that meet the growing demands of our students.

The work this summer will focus on demolition. The School’s original pool—built in 1932— and the adjoining locker rooms have been decommissioned for years. They are in disrepair and will be fully gutted this summer. Then, in the summer of 2023, the truly exciting work begins.

To unify the Middle School, we will extend the library hallway such that it runs all the way to Ms. Wagstaff-Brown’s office. In so doing, we will capture the Little Gym, turning it into three classrooms and an enhanced Middle School lounge. These spaces allow us to lift four Middle School classrooms out of the basement of the Jenkins Wing and into what will now be a unified and updated Middle School.  This much needed project is long overdue!

At the same time, the old pool and locker rooms will transform into art spaces. They will become a dance studio, textile lab (for costuming and fashion design), a recording studio, a music room, and a rehearsal theatre space. With these spaces the arts will continue their rise.

It is critical that we have the appropriate physical spaces to best support student growth and development. This project allows us to do exactly this. Please look for project updates when school resumes in the fall.
