Investing in Teachers Yields Profound Returns

Annie Wright supports teachers. Why? This community cares deeply about their welfare and professional goals, but there is a more urgent motive. Stellar teachers inspire students, and students are at the heart of our mission and inform every decision, every strategic initiative and every penny spent. Here are some of the many ways that our community invests in teachers:

Professional Development
Professional development is a key component of faculty support. Already this year, every teacher has participated in a conference, workshop or training - many teachers in several. Annie Wright hosted the region's signature conference for independent schools in October, and several teachers attended the national independent schools People of Color Conference earlier this month. In addition, faculty have attended IB and subject-specific trainings, mindfulness and counseling workshops, and leadership conferences. Professional development opportunities inspire best practices, creative approaches and student-centered teaching.

Peer Education & Mentorship
Some of the best resources for inspiring teaching excellence are right here at Annie Wright. The time and space to gather, learn and practice are built into every teacher's schedule. Curriculum and Practice groups, led by AWS faculty members, focus on learning support, diversity, technology, community service, testing, school culture and more. New faculty members are mentored by colleague ambassadors as they hone their craft and settle into Annie Wright's student-centered culture. Cross-divisional subject meetings allow teachers to develop a holistic scope and sequence to academic programs, and time for peer observations allows teachers to witness their colleagues' craft, provide feedback and gain inspiration.

Faculty Leadership
Annie Wright also provides the opportunity for teachers to share their expertise, elevating Annie Wright's role in the community and in the world. Examples include leading programs at major conferences, presenting on STEM learning, speaking on an array of subject specialties, conducting workshops on everything from cognitive science to cultural inclusivity, and serving on boards and as educational consultants to businesses and non-profits.

Small Class Sizes
In the end, it is teachers' relationships with students that spark a passion for lifelong learning. One of the key characteristics drawn from Annie Wright's missions statement is that we know our students and value their individuality. Our small class sizes enable our faculty to get to know each student as an individual. Annie Wright teachers recognize and value the unique characteristics and gifts that each student brings.
