Annie Wright at NAIS People of Color Conference
The National Association of Independent Schools People of Color Conference (PoCC) is happening in Seattle December 4-7. Annie Wright’s own Alicia Mathurin, Director of Auxiliary Programs, has been serving as the PoCC Local Committee Chairwoman for the past year. Alicia welcomed attendees at the opening ceremony with an authentic land acknowledgment honoring the Duwamish Tribe, which is the home of Chief Seattle, yet currently unrecognized by the federal government. Ms. Mathurin, who is of African and Native heritage, feels especially honored to lead the opening ceremony to a record-breaking crowd of more than 7,000 attendees.
Alicia, along with 11 other faculty and staff from Lower School, both Upper Schools, Residential Life and Administration, will represent Annie Wright Schools at the conference. This year’s theme, 1619. Before. Beyond. 2019., blends all that is associated with the Pacific Northwest. 1619 Before honors our indigenous tribes and how far we’ve come since 1619, when the first documented ship brought slaves from Africa. Beyond 2019 gives a nod to our local tech culture and anticipated growth as we near ringing in a new decade.
