AWS students explore the world
International mindedness is central to an International Baccalaureate education, and Annie Wright Schools provide opportunities for all students to explore their world. In the Middle and Upper Schools, international travel is either included in tuition or heavily subsidized by the school.
Next month the entire eighth grade will travel to Costa Rica for seven days to study the rainforest, culture, government and language. Part of the Middle School Journeys program, this trip helps cap off the IB Middle Years Programme at Annie Wright. Journeys throughout Middle School focus on the scientific study of biomes and expand the span of learning a bit more every year. Grade 6 students travel to Monterey, California, for four days to study marine biology. This trip is a natural follow-up to the Grade 5 study of the Puget Sound. Grade 7 students study desert environments and the Hopi culture for five days in the Southwest. This experience includes the Grand Canyon.
In Upper School, students have a variety of opportunities to travel across the country and the world, from a few days to two months. Established exchange programs to Spain, France, Argentina, New Zealand and China offer opportunities for deep intercultural connections. The signature activities program, called (s)Electives, offers a range of passion-related travel experiences, from singers competing in a choir festival in Vancouver, BC to journalists learning about Vietnam War propaganda in Hanoi.
