Alumni: Claire Fallat

Claire works with the indigent elderly in Austin, Texas. Last December she began working on a project to “make over” the homes of four clients during 2014. “The first client to receive this makeover has lived in his home for 44 years, built the majority of it himself, and is now a double amputee,” she said. “He lives alone, but he helped raise members of many of the families living on his block, so he is well cared for. His home was chosen for this renovation because his toilet was too tall for him, both his bathroom and kitchen sinks were six inches too high for him to reach from his chair, and his door frames were not wide enough for him to glide through in his wheelchair without chipping away at the wood.” Claire was impressed by the generosity of the volunteers from the Austin Association of Facility And Maintenance Engineers who donated supplies and their own physical labor to complete the project. “Clearly this weekend was all about how we could improve the quality of this man’s life, but it was also about the volunteers,” she said. “I hope that this experience challenged some of their perspectives on poverty, the meaning of disability, and how much can be learned from someone a handful of decades older than you. I am sunburned, sore, still covered in paint, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.”
