Central to the educational philosophy of the Day School is the idea of balance and healthy living. The primary goal of the physical education experience is for all students to have a positive experience. By offering a number of options, we are proud to develop each child's skills to their fullest potential in a positive environment of good sportsmanship. Annie Wright offers a variety of physical education options for students.
Grades PS-5
Beginning in preschool, students participate in weekly movement classes. Students develop locomotor skills such as galloping, gliding, skipping, hopping and running. Students are encouraged to explore different ways they can move and small group games are introduced to create excitement and fine tune these skills.
In the elementary years, students learn how to play competitive sports such as volleyball, soccer, basketball, golf, floor hockey and team handball. Small group games are played to maximize participation and develop the child's fullest athletic potential. In grades four and five, students also participate in intramural activities designed to fine tune athletic skills in a competitive setting. Good sportsmanship and fair play are emphasized at all times.
Swimming is offered to students on a weekly basis in the early childhood and primary years. In the early years, students learn flotation and breathing techniques and quickly build confidence in the water. In the later years, students develop basic skills in freestyle, front crawl and learn about water safety. Individual swim lessons are available for an additional fee.
Grades 6-8
For over 50 percent of our students in grades six through eight, participating in athletics is a way to strike this balance while enjoying the satisfaction of competition and camaraderie.
Through varsity and junior varsity teams competing against local peer middle schools, Annie Wright athletics offer opportunities for players of all skill levels. Whether the goal is to win a league championship or simply learn a new game, AWS athletics provide the appropriate degree of challenge and support.
