Middle School Experience Days Focus on Art & Fun

Middle Schoolers chose from this menu of experiences that focus on the arts for their Annual Experience Days October 27 and 28.

Architecture of Tacoma & Seattle
Join in a two day architectural tour of Tacoma & Seattle. On Day One, explore some of the architectural gems of Tacoma, and on Day Two, venture to Seattle to learn about Art Deco skyscrapers and building of the 1920s on the Diamonds & Gold Tour. Bring your sketchbook and a camera!

Art Museums Tour
Tour the amazing museums that Tacoma has to offer. Options would include Tacoma Art Museum, Glass Museum, Washington State History Museum and the Lemay Car Museum. Hang out in downtown Tacoma for lunch and possibly check out the UW campus.

Ballroom Dancing
It’s your turn to ‘Dance with the Stars’! Spend your Experience at Studio 6 on 6th Ave. learning the Cha-Cha, Salsa, Tango and Swing. Each day you will take class, practice your moves and have lunch on the Ave. The last day, we will have a dance and competition. Bring your swag and lunch money!

Beginning Ukulele
Want to play a ukulele? Come join this group. Each person gets an instrument to keep (of your color choice!), and we will spend the two days looking at chords, finding songs, maybe making a strap, watching videos, and, of course, playing.

Cartography
Maps have been helping us understand our world for thousands of years - and as human understanding of the world around us has changed, so have our maps. In this experience, you'll explore the world of maps, discover a variety of techniques for creating them, and then ultimately make your own - of either a real-life OR fictional place you love.

China Experience
Bruce Lee's Chinatown: What better way to experience Chinatown than through the footsteps of martial arts icon Bruce Lee. Tour includes guided access of the Bruce Lee exhibit (Wing Luke Museum), as well as a meal of Bruce's favorite dishes at a neighborhood restaurant. Time permitting, we will also visit the Lake View Cemetery to pay respects to Bruce Lee's resting place. Day two will focus on Bruce Lee's movies, and the story of his life as told through film. A special appearance by a Gongfu martial artist will allow students to witness the art in live form as well as receive coaching in the art of Gongfu.

Fashion Designing
Do you love fashion? Have you dreamed about having your own runway show at Fashion Week in NY or Paris? Are you addicted to Project Runway? Now is your chance to put your love of design and fashion into action, designing and creating your own outfits in this two-day experience.

Film Making
Want to make a movie? In this fast-paced competition course, you will learn the basics of story-boarding, story-telling, editing, and movie production. We will use the iMovie platform, and movies will be required to use mystery props and lines of dialogue that you will only find out about on the first morning of the course.

Flash Mob
You’ve seen them on YouTube and on the news. Be part of an exciting and (somewhat)spontaneous street performance to Wow the unsuspecting people of Tacoma! Learn some cool moves, come up with a costume, and show your stuff in a grand production!

Guerilla Art
Make two types of guerilla art during day one, followed by going into the city to place our art and take photographs. The second day we visit a farm in Pt. Defiance and a forested area to take more pictures and leave our art.

Iron Chopper
Based on the idea of the shows Chopped and Iron Chef. Iron Chef Challenge - Visit Tacoma Downtown Farmers Market and Metro Market to create a three course gourmet meal based around one exciting ingredient. Chopped Challenge - Supplied with four surprise ingredients compete to create a delicious dish. Create and decorate your own chef's apron and hat so you look like the part too!

Photography
The purpose of this experience is to have a chance to shoot stills, portraits, action, urban and landscape photos. We will use Tacoma as our backdrop and explore as many locations as time permits. No experience necessary, just bring a positive attitude and a camera if possible.
