AWS Track Athletes Head to State

Track athletes Annika Cederstrand and Anna Haddad are headed to the State finals in javelin and 1600m.

Annika, who worked with Annie Wright dad Foss Miller over the past several weeks to help improve her consistency going into the end of the season, earned first place for javelin at the bi-district championships. Last week she achieved a personal best 123-2 to win the Emerald City League Championship.

At the bi-districts she faced tough competition from Cedar Park Christian, Kings, Nooksack, Meridian and Sultan, all of whom had top throws during the season. Only the top four finishers would move on to state. It was a cold day, so none of the girls threw her best distance. Annika came out of prelims in second place with a throw of 109. Going into the finals Annika watched the girl from Nooksack throw a 112 then the girl from Meridian throw a 113. She looked a little nervous as she went through her throw mechanics on the sidelines. She backed up a little farther, slowed down her initial run up and then accelerated through the final steps to bust a huge 119-2 on her opening throw in the finals round. Any throw over 115-11 meant an automatic place in the state tournament. Annika went on to throw a 119-8 to put an exclamation point on her first place finish.

In the challenging 1600m competition, Freshman Anna Haddad finished 7th and gained an automatic bid to state with a time of 5:22:99 (the qualifying mark was 5:23:76).

More highlights from districts: Sophomore Sofia Huboly finished with a personal best time of 5:39:75. The 4 x 200 relay team - Annika, Anna, Meghan Hansen and Ellie Hansen - came in 7th.
