Historic Photograph Reveals Boys' School During First Years of Annie Wright

Recently discovered by Annie Wright staff from the Tacoma Public Library archives: Washington College secondary school, located on Tacoma Avenue South at the present site of Central School. This boys' school opened with 65 students, half of them boarders, in 1886 with an endowment of $50,000 from Charles Wright, two years after he endowed Annie Wright Seminary. The school closed in 1892 during a depression which caused many of the pupils to leave school to find work. Its endowment was then transferred to Annie Wright.
