Community Service Program Reaches Wide

During the holiday season and throughout the year, giving back is an essential part of the Annie Wright community. During Thanksgiving break alone 46 students volunteered for nine different projects.

One such project was the Gingerbread Jamboree, a fundraiser for the Children’s Museum of Tacoma, which required three months of planning and two days of set-up. Students from the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools as well as parent volunteers worked the event, and the Middle School orchestra performed.

Annie Wright students also helped prepare more than 3,000 jars of cookie and soup mixes to donate to food shelters and less fortunate families and volunteered at Mary Bridge Hospital and domestic violence shelters.

Annie Wright has more than 28 community service partners, such as St. Leo’s Food Connection and Backpack Program. “My whole goal is to teach students about themselves through the service of others,” said Tiffany Shaw, All School Community Service Director. “Service activities run daily, most weekends and over holiday breaks. Over Thanksgiving break, this effort was made even stronger to support families housed in the local domestic violence shelter with a gift drive. The goal is to create a ‘store’ of books, toys, pajamas, slippers and more because many of the families had to enter the shelter after leaving all of their possessions behind.”

Our community service program also facilitates year-round in-kind donations. We accept gently used clothes, blankets, jackets, sheets, shoes, food, toys, books and old newspapers. We also gladly accept hot chocolate, cider, coffee and tea to provide to those outside food banks or local shelters.
