Job Shadowing Inspires Future MD

by Tess Williams, Green Tie Class of '15

This week I had the opportunity to job shadow an anesthesiologist, Todd Donato, at the Mary Bridge Hospital. I had an incredible experience and am so grateful; I can now say with confidence I will be pursuing a career in medicine.

Todd, who had just gotten off a full night shift, took the time out of his day to show around a high school student from operating room to operating room - which I’m sure was exactly what he had in mind after a whole night of assisting the deliveries of screaming babies into the world.

The first operation I saw was a hysterectomy, and for anybody who knows me, and my fascination of the ob/gyn profession, knows that I was incredibly engrossed by the whole procedure and have not stopped talking about it since. I was also able to observe an open-heart surgery of a 6 month-old baby. I watched as they brought his tiny, beating heart to a stop so that they could patch a hole in it.

The community of doctors at Mary Bridge were awesome and way too nice to someone who pestered them with such an absurd amount of questions. I hope to have the opportunity to visit Mary Bridge again and watch some more brilliant people do amazing work.
