Middle School Student Flexes His Geography Muscles at the State Geo Bee

Lisa Isenman
On April 4, Grade 7 student Matt Sullivan joined thousands of students in Grades 4-8 across the country in state "Geographic Bee" competitions, run under the auspices of the National Geographic Society. Washington's was held at Pacific Lutheran University.

Students qualify for their state competitions by winning their school Geo Bees and then scoring within the top 100 in the state on a written test. The Geo Bee is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject and increase public awareness about geography.

Matt attributes his general knowledge in geography to travel, watching the news, and Grade 6 geography with Mr. Gardner. Though Matt did not advance to the final round, he did answer six of his eight preliminary round questions correctly, achieving joint second place in his group of 20. Questions covered physical geography, world economies, cities, natural features and current events.

Among the questions he answered correctly:

Q: What is the largest city in the Central American Republic of Costa Rica?
A: San Jose

Q: The Himalayas do not stretch into which of the following countries: Laos, China or Bhutan?
A: Laos

Q: In October 2013, which country, located to the northeast of Lebanon, needed a mass vaccination for polio?
A: Syria

Congratulations to Matt on a very solid performance!
