MIDDLE SCHOOL BOYS' BASKETBALL

The Middle School boys' basketball teams had a great season and progressed tremendously in their skill development and teamwork. During practice each player worked hard on footwork, starting, stopping, defensive positioning and technique. The teams improved remarkably in their skills of jump stops, clearing and squaring up to the basket. These skills are essential in one-on-one development, which will transfer into team skill instruction. Furthermore, the team improved in their defensive positioning in the open court as well as individually. As the players developed their one-on-one defensive skills, they also transferred this to their team defensive strategies. This development was seen in many games with great competition between teams, resulting in close outcomes as the season progressed. All players made great progress and contributed to the success of the team. JV players included: Roderick DiCiro, Eric Holland, Robby Kendig, Joshua Piatok, Aeron Ward, Garrett Clark, James Parrott, Alex Peterson and Cody Shaw. Varsity players included: Daniel Peterson, Troy Bailey, Blake Nygren, Josh Oie, Micah Thompson, Max Bessler, Ryder Black and Jonathan Chen.

MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS' SOCCER

The Middle School girls soccer teams gamely competed in some frigid weather against McMurray, North Lake Tapps and Hawkins Middle Schools. They also took on two non-league matches against Charles Wright and Curtis Junior High. Each team record did not reflect the vast improvement and progress made throughout the season, but the JV team did end the season on a high note by beating rival Charles Wright 1-0.

For Varsity, defense played a key role all season with a solid group of girls protecting the goal including Grade 7 students Anna Haddad, Alison Fitz, Elisabeth Connett and Julia Hanly. Eighth grader Rachel Wasyluka played center midfield, controlling and distributing the ball to fellow eighth graders Anna Andrade and Libby Kendig and seventh grader Arya Kukreja. Grade 6 players Sofia Jeter and Alexandra Bessler both saw some playing time in the midfield as well as forward positions. Eighth graders Grace Hanly and Molly Bryant were the main attackers, both scoring for the Gators this season. Eighth grade goalkeeper Hannah Pukis returned for her third year in this position, while sixth grade newcomer Kelsey Reunanen also got some time there.

JV Team members included Michelle Foster, Abby Givens, Lilly Gray, Cora Shandrow, Sarah Harper, Anna Salam, Holly Shadko, Eliana Sunderland, Caitie Farrell, Amy Hou, Hannah Mills, Amber Moody, Ashley Nelson, Rachel Piatok and Sophie Rockne.

UPPER SCHOOL BASKETBALL

The Annie Wright Varsity basketball team showed great improvement, heart and ability this year. With the assistance of their coaches, head coach Justin Tate and assistant coach Isaac Tate, the girls have really honed their skills. New this year, we have added a Junior Varsity team that was coached by Isaac Tate. This team had a great time building relationships and learning the great sport of basketball.

Through hard work and dedication the Varsity girls finished with a record of six and eight, a vast improvement from previous years. Red Tie senior Paris Cal and Yellow tie freshman Virginia Miller received Emerald City All-League Second Team honors this season.

The team started off slowly due to injuries, but with their continued drive they ended the season on a high, losing to the number three team Northwest by only six points, and then going down to the wire and beating the number 4 team Overlake 49-44. We finished this season one game out of the playoffs, behind Overlake.

This year's varsity roster included two seniors, Paris Cal and Tori Smith, along with Kaley Turner, Nora Wheelehan, Alexis Joshua, Esmee Lai, Abbey Turner, Maria Peterson and Virginia Miller. The JV roster included Sammy Morris, who also played varsity, Maggie Wang, Cindy Hsu, Harman Narwal, Melody Ku and Jagmit Dhami.

BOYS' 4TH & 5TH GRADE BASKETBALL

What a tremendous season the Lower School boys' basketball team had this year. With one practice per week and seven Saturday games, the boys made amazing improvements in their skills and abilities over the course of the season. The focus was learning how to “box out” the opposing players in order to get rebounds, how to utilize our speed and quickness in a fast break, and how to apply certain plays while on offense. The boys were committed, ready to learn, and proved that they could defend, run plays and work together in a cooperative manner in order to gain points on the board. Annie Wright is very proud for their representation as a team that showed great sportsmanship and positive attitude. Thank you boys!

The team included Grade 4 students Miles Davis, Conner Black, Connor Enebrad, Ryan Raney and Tommy Hanly, and Grade 5 students Carter Nelson, Ian Ball, Chai Kwa, Ranbir Pental and Ethan Wasyluka

GIRLS' 4TH & 5TH GRADE BASKETBALL

Exciting would be the best word to describe this year's 2013-2014 4th and 5th grade girls’ basketball season. From the beginning the girls were eager to learn the basics of basketball, as well as achieve a winning season with a record of 4 wins and 3 losses. The girls were enthusiastic the entire season, and were able to pull off many nail-biting games. It was amazing to see many of the girls improve in their knowledge of basic fundamentals as well as the more complicated skills basketball requires. Great defenders, shooters, ball-handlers, rebounders, and leaders emerged this season! I wish my 5th graders the best of luck in middle school basketball, and look forward to seeing the 4th graders implement what they learned this season. Overall it was a great year, with some pretty amazing girls!

Team member were: Abbie Crist, Paisley Cristobal, Lauren Jangard, Ava Johannes, Simren Khan, Ekaterina Kontos-Cohen, Soni Nigam, Anna Parrott, Ella Perrin, Savanna Seher, Kayleigh Shaw
